Bad Dürkheim Wine Festival – Session 2
Wurstmarkt
Step right up and feel the magic of the world’s largest wine festival, the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt vom Riesenrad aus! Held annually in the charming spa town of Bad Dürkheim on Germany’s scenic Wine Route, this jubilant jamboree has been dazzling guests since its humble origins in 1417. As the aroma of roasting sausages fills the air and laughter bubbles from the throngs of joyous visitors, you can’t help but be swept up in the festive atmosphere!
A sea of over 600,000 enthusiasts gather each year during the second and third weekends of September, where they enjoy an array of entertainment, a bustling market, and most importantly, the tantalizing taste of exquisite local wines. The population of Bad Dürkheim, a mere 18,000, is dwarfed by the influx of merry festival-goers, ready to create unforgettable memories.
But the crowning glory of the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt, without a doubt, is the gargantuan Riesenfass, or Giant Barrel. This isn’t your ordinary wine barrel – it’s the world’s largest! Constructed in 1934 by local vintner Fritz Keller, this colossal wooden masterpiece boasts a whopping volume of 1.7 million liters! Today, the Riesenfass serves as a unique and bustling weinstube and restaurant, where you can sip fine wines inside a monumental testament to Bad Dürkheim’s rich viticultural history.
So come, join the jubilee at the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt, where history, fun, and exquisite wines unite in a breathtaking celebration! Don’t miss out on this once-a-year, larger-than-life event. Your glass is waiting!”
