New Year’s Eve in August in Bérchules
What happens when you mix a blackout, a cheeky challenge, and a town full of determined party-lovers? You get Summer New Year’s Eve! Since 1995, the first Saturday of August in Berchules has been a snowy, sparkly, tinsel-covered rebellion against power outages. Born from a New Year’s Eve celebration lit by candlelight (thanks to a badly timed blackout), this unique festival flips the calendar and throws winter’s wildest night in the middle of summer—with fake snow, Christmas lights, and even the Three Wise Men strolling through the heat.
What started as a protest has become a full-blown tourist magnet declared a Festival of Tourist Interest by Andalusia in 2020. Expect nativity scenes, carols, grapes at midnight, bubbly, and enough turrón to confuse your taste buds. If you’ve ever wanted to sip anise liqueur in shorts while singing “Silent Night,” this is your moment. Berchules doesn’t wait for December to party—because around here, the most wonderful time of the year is in August!
