Carnaval de Binche

Get ready for the zaniest three days of your life at the Carnival of Binche, Belgium! This annual celebration, held in the vibrant town of Binche during the days leading up to Ash Wednesday, invites everyone to don their most outrageous outfits and join in the fun. Since the 14th century, the festival has been a whirlwind of color, culture, and sheer joy, highlighted by the dazzling Gilles—clown-like performers in striking costumes of red, black, and yellow. They might look silly, but they mean business when it comes to flinging oranges into the crowd! But beware: catching one is considered a sign of good luck, while throwing it back might just earn you a playful glare from the Gilles.

UNESCO recognized this quirky carnival as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003, and it’s easy to see why! Imagine thousands of revelers, with up to 1,000 Gilles strutting their stuff on Shrove Tuesday, rhythmically dancing to the beat of drums and tossing citrus fruits like it’s a good ol’ food fight. Just remember, it’s a faux pas to throw those oranges back; after all, they’re a gift from the Gilles! So, whether you’re there for the vibrant costumes, the thrilling atmosphere, or simply to catch some flying oranges, the Carnival of Binche is a not-to-be-missed event that promises laughter, excitement, and a taste of Belgian culture like no other!
