Welcome to Latacunga, Ecuador, home to the vivacious Mama Negra festival! Celebrated twice a year, this cultural extravaganza started as an ode to the Virgin of Merced but has since blossomed into one of Ecuador’s top national festivities. Declared an “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ecuador” in 2005, this captivating event pulls in throngs of curious travelers from all corners of the world, especially during its November edition.

But what’s the magic behind Mama Negra? Legend has it that, during a volcanic eruption in 1742, the townsfolk of Latacunga, led by the brave Gabriela de Quiroz, sought protection from the Virgin of Merced. As a token of gratitude for her divine intervention, the townsfolk vowed to throw an annual bash in her honor. Today, you’ll find a blend of this spiritual homage with a vibrant celebration of emancipation, as the festival also honors the African miners of the region and their release from colonial bondage.

The heart of Mama Negra is its colorful parade – a riot of sights and sounds! At the forefront, there’s the Mama Negra herself, a regally dressed figure (always portrayed by a man) riding on a horse, followed by an array of eccentric characters – from the majestic King Moor to the flag-waving Banner Bearer. Prepare to be drenched in festive joy (and perhaps some milk!) as you revel amidst traditional dances, music, and local lore. Whether you’re a history buff, a culture enthusiast, or just someone looking to have a good time, Mama Negra promises memories that’ll last a lifetime!
