Festa des Vermar

Ring the bells, pop the corks, and let the grape battles begin! It’s that grape-stompingly magical time of the year in Binissalem, Mallorca, where vineyards aren’t just places of work but playgrounds of joy. The renowned Festa des Vermar is not just any festival; it’s a celebration of a successful harvest, rich Mallorcan traditions, and of course, the vivacious spirit of the Binissalem folks. Representing one of the oldest and most important wine designations of origin in the Balearic Islands (and Spain!), when September rolls around, the whole town gets decked out, and the air fills with the tantalizing aroma of the special dish, Fideus de Vermar – a delightful blend of lamb, spices, and fideuá.

As the festival winds to its peak, the excitement builds up a few days before the big bash. Around 2000 to 2500 locals and visitors gather the day before the beginning of the festival for a mouth-watering feast of the regional dish, Fideus de Vermar, where lamb meat and noodles take center stage. This sumptuous meal is free for locals, with a nominal charge for visitors, making it a community event in the truest sense. Tickets can be conveniently purchased at the town hall, ensuring everyone gets a taste of this local culinary delight.

Step into this lively tradition where streets become vibrant stages, and locals don their traditional Mallorcan garb. There’s music, parades with stunning floats, and the ever-enthralling “correfocs” (fire-runners). But let’s grape to the chase: the highlight? The epic grape battle that ensues on the last Saturday. A word of advice? Wear something you won’t mind getting grape-stained as grape rain showers are a guarantee! So, if you fancy the idea of dancing under grape showers, indulging in some hearty Fideus de Vermar, and experiencing the heart and soul of Mallorcan culture, Binissalem during Festa des Vermar is where you want to be. Vine and shine, folks!

Note: The final program is usually published at the end of August or the beginning of September by the town hall. Please check the official link below for more information.
